| Gellert bath resort |

| I'd visit Hungary just to take a relaxing bath in Gellert. I heard it's one of the destinations that tourists go for when they go to Hungary.

Hi all,
I am currently planning my trip to Hungary. Will spend 2 full days exploring Budapest itself but I have 1 extra day to burn. After some reading and researching, I have options as of below:-
1) Pecs & Harkany
2) Lake Balaton
3) Holloko
4) Hortobagy National Park - The Puszta
5) Esztergom
My question is, which one of these locations would you prefer? If you have other more interesting option, I would really like to hear from you.
Regards. |

Hi Karina,
I think one very nice place is missing from your list. I live in Eger, it's in the east-northern part of Hungary in Heves county. It's one of the nicest barokk towns in Hungary. There is a famous castle called the castle of Eger in the centre of Eger, which was a very important castle in the Hungarian history. This castle stopped the turkish troops to invade further north and reach the western part of Europe. Apart from the old town centre with full of nice buildings, including the Bazilika, which is the second biggest cathedral in Hungary, or the barokk building of Eszertházy Károly Kollage, in which you can find Europe nicest library, which is open for tourist. If you go into that library, you will see the magnificiant fresco of the Trident Assembly. Also in the town centre you can find the famous turkish bath, the turkish minaret which are the remains of the 150 year turkish invasion. Next to Eger in Demjén and Egerszalók, which are very close to Eger ( 5- 15 kms) you can find open air spas which are turlly refreshing places. The best time to visit at nihgt. Finally there is the famous Nice Women Walley in the outskirts of Eger. In this walley there are numerous wine cellars where you can taste the local wines.
I hope you will visit this town and will have a very nice and unforgettable time in the town as it is usually called 'the barokk jewellery box' .
Best Regards,
Judit from Eger. |

Hi Karina,
I had the opportunity to visit Hungary for several weeks last summer as part of a mission trip. We lived and worked in Budakalasz, just to the northeast of Budapest. Since we were there to work, I didn't get to see as much of the country as I would have liked but what I did see, I enjoyed very much.
One spot I had a chance to visit was Szentendre, just a short commuter train ride from Budapest. A charming little village on the banks of the Danube. The following link will take you to some of my pictures from the area: http://www.gather.com/viewAlbum.action?albumId=8671
I was only able to spend a portion of 2 days sightseeing in Buda and Pest and the following link will take you to some photos of those trips: http://www.gather.com/viewAlbum.action?albumId=8670
I wish I had the opportunity to visit the places you are talking about but there just wasn't enough time. I hope you have a great trip!

Well i think the best choice of these would be Esztergom, cuz it is beautiful in every time of the year. You can visit the Basilica there. once i climb to the top of and the city is beautiful from the roof:) you can ask theguide whether you can do it now as well. the problem is with others to my mind is that they are beautiful or well lets say useful in warmer weather. and it is the best choice because of the location it is close to Budapest:)
I hope i could help.
i wish you beautiful days in Hungary:)
